Software Developer (Python, AWS) - Earth Observation

Spire Global is a space-to-cloud analytics company that owns and operates the largest multi-purpose constellation of satellites. Its proprietary data and algorithms provide the most advanced maritime, aviation, and weather tracking in the world. In addition to its constellation, Spire’s data infrastructure includes a global ground station network and 24/7 operations that provide real-time global coverage of every point on Earth.

As a spacecraft automation engineer at Spire, you will be part of a close-knit team that is laser-focused on providing high-quality weather data to customers around the globe. You will write software that monitors and safeguards the operation of the Earth Observation (EO) payload in each of Spire’s nanosatellites, ensuring that we will be able to scale to a full constellation of more than 100 satellites delivering massive quantities of EO data each day. Through this, you can positively impact people's lives and the society by improving weather forecasts and providing data that are crucial for monitoring climate change.

Your day-to-day tasks will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Creating and improving systems that monitor the EO payload's status, observation performance, and anomalies, that allow smooth configuration of the EO payload, and timely access to downlinked data.
  • Investigating and mitigating payload anomalies that are escalated to the engineering team.
  • Preparing and deploying EO payload software on-orbit updates.
  • Supporting / guiding the EO payload checkout operations during the satellite commissioning period after each launch through data analysis, visualization, and detailed documentation – there are several launches each year!
  • Creating and maintaining tools that enable the successful completion of all aforementioned duties.

Basic qualifications

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with web technologies, building applications and microservices
  • Experience implementing software systems in the Python programming language

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong data analysis skills, including statistics, hypothesis testing, and data visualization
  • Detail-oriented personality; careful, methodological, and persistent in tracking down problems
  • Mastery of the Python programming language
  • Experience with cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform(GCP), and the ability to manage, end-to-end, the design, implementation, and deployment of cloud-based services and applications
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Linux system administration and scripting skills
  • Willing and capable of dealing with multiple tasks simultaneously and determining one's own priorities
  • Experience with designing or implementing EO / GNSS / GPS / GPS-RO / GNSS-R systems
  • Experience with any field related to radio science, eg, RF design, EMI diagnosis / mitigation, etc.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, particularly when applied to anomaly detection
