Director, Sales Engineering

The Role

As the Director of Sales Engineering, you will lead a growing team responsible for providing space-based data solutions and services to our global customer base. You will manage your team to effectively support all technical sales pursuits, bridging the gap between customer requirements and Spire solutions across business units. You will support the fast-paced sales cycles through close collaboration with the sales and engineering leaders at Spire, constantly improving processes to enable efficient and timely technical support. You are customer obsessed, delivering technical support to customers throughout the pre-sales, onboarding, and service lifetime of the engagement. 

This role is currently open for a Remote/Hybrid arrangement.


  • Lead growing team of global Sales Engineers responsible for providing technical support and solutions throughout the sales cycle.
  • Establish key performance indicators and service level agreements for the Sales Engineering team, collaborating closely with the engineering and sales leaders within Spire to monitor and improve support processes.
  • Serve as the primary technical POC to the customer throughout the sales cycle and onboarding process.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations and reports explaining Spire’s products and services to prospective customers.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts within the organization to assess feasibility of customer-driven solutions, refine scope and technical details of complex programs, and generally represent the voice and requirements of the customer within the organization throughout the sales cycle.
  • Support the sales team in the development of technical proposals and generating or sourcing of technical content specific to the customer’s application in a timely manner to ensure customer deadlines and sales objectives are met.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between the sales and engineering teams and provide routine product updates and training to the sales staff.
  • Work closely with the sales team and product managers to identify gaps in current capabilities to drive the technology roadmap and enhance the product offering.


Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in sales engineering or customer-facing technical role
  • Experience working in the Satellite/Space Industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant Engineering discipline (e.g. Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems), Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent combination of technical and work experience

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to have Skills):

  • Experience managing diverse technical Sales teams spanning multiple engineering disciplines and time zones
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with clients and effectively communicating with other members of cross-functional teams
  • Strong comprehension skills to enable timely understanding of complex customer requirements and identification of thorough and sometimes unique solutions
  • Experience working with bulk and dynamic data sets within GIS platforms (i.e. ArcGIS) to manipulate and visualize different types of data for product demonstrations and analysis
  • Experience working with cloud-based platforms (i.e. AWS and GCP) and APIs
  • Experience in application or script development (preferably Python)
  • Experience working with relational and non­-relational database theory and practice (i.e. PostgreSQL, Redis, ORMs, consistent hashing, SQL)
  • Experience in satellite mission design, development, and testing with a clear understanding of major mission design trades and scope drivers (power / payload duty cycle, communications systems / data budgets, ground stations, launch and environmental loads, EMI/EMC, thermal management, etc.)
