Real-Time GNSS Expert

Spire — Glasgow
Real-Time GNSS Expert - image

Spire Global is a 160-person space data company founded in 2012. In less than seven years, Spire has built one of the world's largest satellite constellations, and we're just getting started.

We are looking for a Real-Time GNSS Expert to join our Glasgow office. The Real-Time GNSS Expert will be an integral part of a small but agile team tasked with using large quantities of satellite data assimilated into an ionosphere model to create real-time corrections to improve the performance of GNSS location-based services and other applications.

Positioning errors from ionospheric effects on GNSS signals remain one of the last hurdles in improving real-time GNSS precise point positioning (PPP) accuracies. Furthermore, ionospheric errors can increase the time to first fix in real-time kinematic (RTK) systems and ionospheric scintillation can reduce the accuracy of all GNSS systems. Spire satellites have the unique capability to measure TEC and scintillation indices globally and to thereby provide near real-time estimates of ionospheric delay and disturbance effects on GNSS services. The Real-Time GNSS Expert will help transform the outputs of our ionospheric data assimilation model into useful near real-time corrections for GNSS services, leading to greater confidence in applications that require high accuracy and resiliency, such as autonomous vehicle navigation.

Responsibilities of your role:

  • Evaluate customer needs for GNSS services, specifically for applications requiring real-time corrections of ionosphere-induced positioning errors (e.g., autonomous vehicle navigation)
  • Work with the ionosphere modeling and data assimilation teams on defining system requirements based on customer needs
  • Coordinate real-time delivery of the GNSS corrections produced by the ionospheric data assimilation model to customers
  • Interact with customers and plan pilot projects that will transform into long-term contracts for real-time GNSS corrections services

Qualifications / Experience:

  • Direct experience in GNSS signal observables and processing and in-depth knowledge of how ionospheric corrections can improve GNSS performance.
  • Ph.D. or M.S. in GNSS surveying or geodesy, electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related field
  • Strong Linux computer skills
  • Experience with programming and analysis in Python (preferred) or Matlab/Octave
  • Intimate knowledge of GNSS signal processing, navigation, and corrections for various error sources
  • Experience with GNSS software, particularly RTKLIB
  • Exceptionally well-organized, with the ability to go as deep as needed in any project to identify and resolve problems
  • Adaptability to new ideas and the ability to push the envelope of GNSS capabilities to deliver unique solutions for various applications

Strong candidates will also possess skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience with customers of GNSS services, including real-time corrections for vehicle navigation
  • A publication record in peer-reviewed journals
