Spire is a 180-person, satellite-powered data company that owns and operates an extensive nano-satellite network that collects high-value data relevant to decision-makers operating in a world marked by rapid change. We create and sell data and data analytics focused on a number of industries including aviation, energy and maritime situational awareness.

We’re looking for an Applied Meteorologist to work with our first-rate in-house team of meteorologists, scientists and software engineers to add even more value to the data generated by our private satellite constellation and proprietary numerical weather prediction system. You’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference around the world in numerous arenas as we continue to grow our portfolio of data and services.

Responsibilities of your role:

  • Take ownership of our NWP meteorological product creation software
  • Work with Spire’s science and software teams to design, develop and implement new and improved products and capabilities within our NWP system
  • Ensure customer feedback is incorporated into our solutions
  • Analyze forecast performance, identify strengths and shortfalls, and feed this information back to the team

Qualifications / Experience:

What we definitely need:

  • Understanding of atmospheric processes and phenomena, particularly those that are disruptive to society, obtained through a graduate degree in atmospheric science
  • Experience developing and implementing features within meteorological models (such as WRF, MPAS, or FV3) and/or associated downstream processing software
  • Demonstrated skill and experience with software development, particularly with geophysical data analysis involving meteorological or oceanographic data
  • A proven track record of team-based problem solving from concept through implementation
  • A working knowledge of modern Fortran

What we’d also love to see:

  • Proficiency with Python and its scientific-processing infrastructure (Conda, Numpy/Scipy, matplotlib)
  • Working knowledge of meteorological datasets and formats including GRIB and NetCDF
  • Prior history with high-performance computing and/or distributed computing at scale
  • Past experience with meteorological forecast verification and assessment activities
  • Desire to adhere to the core tenets of the software development lifecycle
  • Familiarity with modern software engineering best practices: agile methodologies, revision-control systems, testing & continuous integration
