Driving IoT connectivity on Earth, from Space
The use of IoT-connected devices is growing exponentially worldwide. As opportunities expand, so does the need for robust, secure, and scalable connectivity.
Spire Space Services and Myriota are driving their partnership forward together to bring reliable, robust satellite connectivity to global IoT users.
About Myriota
Australia-based Myriota is a direct-to-orbit (non-terrestrial network) IoT communications leader on a mission to deliver better outcomes for people and our planet through simple-to-use IoT solutions that “just work”, anywhere. The company has a growing constellation of satellites that deliver its global IoT connectivity service and nearly a decade of customer-driven research and product development, applying these technologies using nanosatellite-based software-defined radios. They are known for their product’s security and battery life which surpasses the nearest alternative by 10-30 times.
To accelerate the firm’s global service expansion, Myriota has enhanced its partnership with Spire Global – the leading provider of space services, to continue to meet its growing need for low latency space-enabled satellite connectivity.
Challenge
Myriota initially harnessed Spire’s ‘Software in Space’ solution to meet their customers’ growing need for low-cost, scalable global connectivity. This solution leveraged Spire’s existing satellite constellation, providing extensive global connectivity across all geographies, including where cellular or terrestrial coverage is limited or inconsistent.
As Myriota’s needs evolved, they sought to develop their partnership with Spire further, building on their learnings from the ‘Software in Space’ solution.

Solution
Through Spire’s ‘Solutions in Space’, Myriota and Spire quickly co-developed new software-denied radio equipped nanosatellites, growing their constellation from 20+ satellites to 30+, utilizing a combination of physical and digital payloads. This enhanced IoT connectivity solutions, making a real-world impact. By scaling connectivity, Myriota were able to more efficiently meet customers’ needs and achieve commercial objectives successfully, going from concept to commercial viability within four years.

Results
Spire’s ‘Software in Space’ and ‘Solution in Space’ have simplified space for Myriota, providing advanced solutions without the need for expensive investments in manufacturing and infrastructure. This partnership has enabled Myriota to deliver advanced space-enabled IoT services to a broad range of industries, from delivering effective water management for large and remote farming operations through cost-efficient remote monitoring, to providing the Australian military with an accurate picture of live battlefields through tagged asset locations, alongside visualized data via a web application.
Combined with Spire’s ‘Solutions in Space’ Myriota’s direct-to-orbit transmission tech connects remote sensors and devices without relying on traditional networks through their bespoke satellite communications system. This provides these sectors with communications, underpinned by reliable, scalable space infrastructure. As Myriota’s customer base grows, their integrated module into customer’s products alongside their FlexSense hardware will adapt and connect as Spire seamlessly scales its solution, to meet the demand for more data, more securely and faster.
“We’ll be increasing connection capacity and introducing a flexible, large message API to make it easy for developers to send long messages. Customers will be empowered to use as much data as they need, this means richer data sets, higher fidelity for tracking and sensing and the flexibility to stay in control of data charges. We use the forward path of our bi-directional communication system, from the cloud out to devices, to send network information updates to Myriota modules, putting that capability in the hands of customers and that’s exciting.”

“We both have mature, proven systems; and the value of integrating them is even greater than the sum of the parts. One of Myriota’s core values is being in-it-together, which matches Spire’s value of collaboration, and this became very apparent in our early discussions.
Our collaboration opens up new opportunities for tracking and monitoring applications. By sending and receiving data more frequently, devices will communicate with a satellite very quickly, which means improved timeliness for position reports and sensor readings – and ultimately better operational visibility. Myriota’s tracking and logistics customers have confirmed they will now be able to address 100% of their target-use cases with the insights they gain.”
