How Spire Weather is enhancing digital agricultural solutions with advanced weather forecasts
As a pioneering agri-fintech platform, Mantle Labs constantly strives to innovate and scale its functionality to help the world’s 600 million farmers.
A recent report published by the Food and Agricultural Organization estimated that these family farms occupy 70-80% of the planet’s cultivable land and approximately contribute to one-third of the global food supply. As over 25% of food production comes from developing nations like India where there’s a scarcity of reliable weather infrastructure, modern technology can help fill the data void.
Mantle Labs created Geobotanics-its AI-powered platform to deliver timely insights to its farmers to maximize their profit yields and to conduct stronger risk assessments. This is especially critical in the face of our rapidly accelerating climate change. For instance, fluctuations in precipitation trends, predicted rises in temperatures and modifications in extreme weather events, may all impact agricultural productivity adversely.
Challenge
The primary challenge faced by Mantle Labs was acquiring high quality weather data from across the globe, including remote locations. An AI system is only as effective as its inputs. Previously, they’d engage with multiple data sources that varied in terms of granularity and consistency. This limited the scope of grid coverage Mantle Labs had access to. There is a plethora of under-observed territories that do not have the means nor the skillset to invest in weather data infrastructure and methodology.
Due to this, Mantle Labs could not explore the full potential of its digital agricultural solutions at a global scale.
Solution
To address these limitations, Spire Global partnered with Mantle Lab to empower the international players on the agricultural field.
“We’re a specialist company that does remote sensing, so we know the value that satellite technology brings to the table. This is why we’re so happy Spire provides such data points using satellite technology as it covers the entire world without any gaps. Before, the level of accuracy was only 75% but now with Spire’s integration, it’s gone up to 95%.”
