As the Engineering Director of Spire's “Platform Engineering” team, you will lead the interdisciplinary group of hardware engineers, software engineers, domain specialists, and technical managers responsible for the development of Spire’s satellites. You will manage the ongoing, iterative improvements to the common “LEMUR-2” bus used for all Spire’s data products, as well as the development of new, customized satellites for customers of Spire’s Orbital Services business. You will work with Spire’s CTO and VP Space Systems to execute on strategic R&D initiatives to improve the capability of the platform, and work alongside the head of satellite manufacturing to release new products on-time, on-budget, and at high quality.

Responsibilities of your role:

  • Develop and maintain the engineering plans, balancing the rate of feature delivery with tech debt accumulation, stretching your team to work outside their comfort zone on challenging yet achievable timelines.
  • Collaborate with the CTO and VP Space Systems to keep engineering development projects aligned to strategic technology roadmap, keeping Spire’s space engineering agile and aligned to delivering customer value.
  • Achieve operational excellence, implementing and optimizing the platform engineering team’s organization structure and processes to run at maximum efficiency and velocity.
  • Foster a high-performance engineering culture aligned with the Spire Values, assembling and developing a team of collaborative superstars, attracting and hiring top talent, developing and managing their performance.
  • Represent the platform engineering team to internal stakeholders (including CEO) and external stakeholders (including customers) on ongoing projects and aspects of process and culture


Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a leadership role, leading interdisciplinary technical team(s), managing both directly (individual contributors) and indirectly (via technical managers)
  • Experience in the development of low-volume, high-quality, modern, complex technical systems (such as for use in automotive, industrial, medical, aerospace, or similar applications)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, balancing cost, schedule, scope, and risk to optimize deliveries in an agile, iterative environment.
  • Experience in the full product life-cycle including concept, development, production, production support, and end-of-life, with a particular strength in new product introduction
  • Experience in implementing and managing change, such as ongoing improvement to engineering processes, tools and methods.
  • Ability to attract and manage talent, mentoring both individual contributors and leaders.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  • Technical background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and/or software engineering
  • Formal training and and/or experience with strategic leadership and data-driven decision making
  • Experience with spacecraft systems design, assembly, integration, testing, and/or in-orbit operations
  • Familiarity with quality and engineering standards (ISO, ECSS, or similar)
