Spire Global is a space-to-cloud analytics company that owns and operates the world's largest multi-purpose constellation of satellites. Its proprietary data and algorithms provide the most advanced maritime, aviation, and weather tracking in the world. In addition to its constellation, Spire’s data infrastructure includes a global ground station network and 24/7 operations that provide real-time global coverage of every point on Earth.

We are seeking research scientists to advance the use of space-based data in the development of advanced weather analysis and forecasting.  We seek individuals with graduate degrees in the geosciences, along with the capacity to contribute to the areas of applied research, software development, numerical modeling, verification, machine learning, and/or product engineering.

This is an exciting opportunity for motivated scientists to work with a team of practitioners ranging from numerical modelers to computer scientists to satellite experts within Spire. There may also be opportunities to work with scientists from around the world to advance the understanding and use of satellite derived Earth observations, all with the end-goal of making weather forecasts better for the global community. Ultimately, successful candidates will possess a strong scientific and software development background that will enable them to effectively work within Spire’s Weather Science and Engineering team.

Potential Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, modify, and improve numerical models, data processing systems, expert algorithms, etc.  
  • Collaborate in the development, testing, and implementation of weather-related algorithms used in assessing the state of the atmosphere and predicting its future
  • Interface with Spire internal and external customers to understand and translate requirements into weather-related capabilities, products, and services
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and/or workshops and publish results in scientific journals

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Masters or Ph.D. degree
  • Software development experience in modern programming languages 

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with numerical weather prediction, weather applications, and/or data formats common in the weather domain (BUFR, GRIB, NetCDF)
  • Experience with forecast verification
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate amongst cross-functional engineering, science, and product development teams
  • Private sector experience is a plus
  • Advanced degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science.
